Red Hat announced the launch of RHEL AI at its Denver Summit in May 2024. The Red Hat Enterprise Linux AI platform enables users to develop, test and deploy Generative AI models, such as LLMs.
Overcome barriers to enterprise AI
Packaged for individual deployments on the hybrid cloud, RHEL AI incorporates the Granite family of Open Source LLMs from IBM research with InstructLab tools which enable community contributors to add additional skills or knowledge to a particular model.
Red Hat’s Senior VP, Ashesh Badani, commented:
‘RHEL AI and the InstructLab project, coupled with Red Hat OpenShift AI at scale, are designed to lower many of the barriers facing GenAI across the hybrid cloud, from limited data science skills to the sheer resources required, while fueling innovation both in enterprise deployments and in upstream communities.’
The InstructLab tools and Granite models make AI initiatives more accessible to a wider group of non-specialist employees by allowing them to add specific, relevant knowledge and skills to use cases.
More RHEL AI Benefits
An aspect of LLMs which deters some organisations is licensing uncertainty around their text output. Red Hat provides a solution to this uncertainty by including indemnity over output text for RHEL AI customers.
RHEL AI’s ability to run across various hardware and location options whilst delivering maximum performance also differentiates it from other market options. Speaking at the recent Denver Red Hat Summit, Red Hat CEO, Mike Hicks, spoke of this advantage:
‘We believe that AI is not really different than applications. That you’re going to need to train them in some places, run them in other places. And we’re neutral to that hardware infrastructure. We want to run anywhere.’
An additional benefit of RHEL AI that Mike Hicks highlighted is that Red Hat’s OpenSource approach to AI means that clients can keep hold of their IP, ‘We provide the service and subscriptions business and you’re not giving up your IP to work with us.’
This latest release is part of Red Hat’s vision to advance client organisations’ abilities in application development whilst maintaining customer confidence in the reliability they expect from Red Hat platforms.

RHEL AI is ideal for organisations who want to incorporate an LLM into new or existing applications.
It is also useful for organisations who are currently using a large language model and want an enterprise-class release schedule and support program. For more information on RHEL AI, visit the AI from Red Hat website pages.
